What kind of school is Bessemer Academy?
Bessemer Academy is a faith-based, non-denominational, co-educational, independent, non-profit, college preparatory school.  Educating grades K3-12th, BA draws students from over 30 different zip codes around central Alabama.

How long has Bessemer Academy been in existence?
Bessemer Academy was founded in 1970.  In 1981, Faith Academy merged with Bessemer Academy. We enjoy a long tradition of providing excellence to our community.

How many students attend Bessemer Academy? 
We are growing in enrollment every year.  In the 2016-17 academic year, we have an enrollment of approximately 415 students.  Students come to BA from numerous central Alabama communities including, McCalla, Hueytown, Midfield, Brookwood, Pleasant Grove, Hoover, Helena, Vance, Vestavia, Alabaster, Pelham and Birmingham.

What is the class size?
While Bessemer Academy is excited about our growth, we also recognize the importance of smaller class sizes. The AISA requires a student-teacher ratio of 23:1, which BA upholds. However, we try to keep the class sizes even smaller, particularly in our core areas.

What kind of academic programs are available at Bessemer Academy?
Bessemer Academy offers the A Beka curriculum for grades K3-6th.  This is an accelerated Christian based curriculum.  BA is a college preparatory school for grades 7th through 12th.  Students study English, mathematics, science, history, foreign language, art, speech, drama, technology and character education.

How is Bessemer Academy accredited?
BA is fully accredited through the Alabama Independent School Association (AISA) and through the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).

What kind of athletic programs are available at Bessemer Academy?
Bessemer Academy supports competitive athletic teams in many sports including football, volleyball, cheerleading, dance team, cross country, boys’ and girls’ basketball, softball, baseball, track and field, golf, and weightlifting.  BA athletes compete in the AISA Class 3A.  We are proud to be 8 time State Champions in football in 2002, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2015, 2016, and 2019.  We are also 2 time State Champions in basketball in 2008 and 2015 and 2 time State Champions in wrestling in 2005 and 2006.

In 2013, the volleyball team became our first girls team to win a state championship in any girls’ sport at BA.

What is the admissions process for Bessemer Academy?
Families who are interested in Bessemer Academy are encouraged to contact the office at 205-428-6288.  The first step in the admissions process is to schedule a personal visit. Are students required to wear a uniform?
No, but there is a school dress policy that must be followed.
