Bessemer Academy had two athletes chosen to participate in the All-Star basketball games for the AISA this year. The girls team ended their season with an Elite Eight appearance and the boys with the Final Four.

All Bessemer Academy students in grades 6-12 complete a science fair project each year to compete in our local science fair. This year, the Rebels set a new record of 305 projects. That’s 305 students devoting time to learn in unique, hands-on ways, following the scientific process from start to finish. The Rebels had five athletes selected for the AISA football all-star game. Additionally, Coach Wright was selected an all-star coach! Congratulations to these young men who represent the Rebel Family so well.

As the Fall semester winds down, here are somethings happening at BA for parents and students to keep in mind. The office will be closed December 18 – January 2. Staff returns Friday, January 3 and students returned the following Monday, January 6. Preschool and Elementary Program The Preschool and Elementary Christmas Program will be Friday, December 13, at 8:30 am in the BA gymnasium. Exam Schedule Exams for 6th-12th grades will begin Tuesday, December 10th. Tuesday and Wednesday will be regular school days, with 7th period exams during the regular 7th period class times. Thursday – Monday will follow exam schedule. First exam each day will be 8:00 – 9:30am, break 9:30 – 10:00, second exam 10:00 – 11:30, dismissal at 11:30am. Here is the schedule of exams. Niña and Pinta Ships Our elementary classes spent a day in Tuscaloosa exploring the Niña and Pinta replica ships. These ships are “sailing museums,” and the students got to learn about these tiny ships that sailed over 25,000 miles. Additionally, the students got to explore the Museum of Natural History in Tuscaloosa.  DNA The Freshmen biology classes went to the McWane Science Center to isolate their own DNA. They performed PCR and ran an electrophoresis gel to see their DNA fingerprints. Brain dissection Anatomy students had the opportunity to learn about Huntington’s disease and explore the region of the brain it can affect. In addition to that they learned about the structures and functions of the eye.

The Rebels’ road to the 2019 State Championship was an unusual one. The season started 0-2, with opponents outscoring the Rebels 97-12.  But then something changed. All it took was a spark—a 49-14 victory over Evangel—and the Rebels finished the season 11-1, averaging 41.3 points per game, and allowing only 16 per game.   The Playoffs BA entered the playoffs ranked 2nd in the region, behind Tuscaloosa Academy. The Rebels hosted Fort Dale Academy and saw a 49-0 victory. With three rushing touchdowns, a pick-6, fumble recovery and punt returns for touchdowns, the Rebels just couldn’t be stopped. For the second round, BA traveled to the defending state champion, Monroe Academy. The Rebels beat Monroe 38-21 in the regular season, but this game would be on their turf, so all bets were off.
