Each year all high school students spend hours and days and weeks completing projects to compete in our school science fair. Judges come from all over to decide on winners for each category. Additionally, 3 top winners from the biological and physical categories will represent Bessemer Academy at the district science fair. The school winners were announced this week. There is an app in the app store called Perfect 36. This app contains 20 lessons on each of the four subjects covered on the ACT, there are over 1000 practice problems, 200 of the most common vocabulary words, and high quality videos that teach the concepts covered on the math section of the test. This way, every student can have chance to prepare for the ACT. Our school out of a handful in the tri-state area was chosen to participate in a free month trial of the website. Upon entering the website, you will be asked to log in. Simply use the username and password provided. The free one-month trial will end on 10/22/17. Jo Turner, grandmother of BA student, Julianna Bloch, won the 50/50 raffle at the first home football game. She has decided to donate the $500 back to our school to buy 5 microscopes for Mrs. Howard and the middle school science department. Mrs. Turner found out about the need, and she decided to donate – “from an old biology teacher and a grandmother of a middle school student who loves science.” Thank you! Our BA families are so wonderful!  

How has Bessemer Academy grown and changed from last school year to now? There are 150 new students since last year. Mrs. Morrow, our guidance counselor, said that they all fit in very well, like they have been here forever, and are all individually amazing students who have brought in many new ideas. We also asked Mrs. Kelly, our headmaster, her thoughts on all the new students. She said that she is very proud of how focused they are on academics. That their general behavior is really impressive and they are very appropriate as far as dress code and manners. We have had to divide the honors classes in high school. Now instead of two regular classes and one honors class for each grade, we have two honors and one regular class. She loves that our school is moving in a direction of high level academics.
