Tonight our varsity football team faces off against Lamar School, from Mississippi to kick off the 2016 season. We are honored to have been invited to the Southeastern Commission of Independent School’s inaugural Kick-Off Classic in the Cramton Bowl in Montgomery.   If you are unable to attend, you can buy live stream access online for 7.99 for the game. On Thursday, May 19, 2016, the 55 members of the graduating class of 2016 moved their tassels and became alumni. The entire BA family extends our best wishes on your bright future!   An astounding $6.6 million in scholarships was offered to this class. The 2nd, 3rd, and 4th graders participated in a program with the Birmingham Southern basketball team called “Turn the Page with Coach Graves.”  Each child read 5 books to earn a ticket for their whole family to attend a basketball game at Birmingham Southern.  The classes read a total of 210 books in just one week. Way to go! (and have fun at the basketball game- you earned it!)  

National signing day is a celebration for athletes all over the country, and today at Bessemer Academy three of our highly recruited football players made their decisions known. All three were AISA All Stars. Outside linebacker Jordan B. Jones (pictured left) has chosen Alabama A&M in Huntsville. Offensive lineman Mike Williams (center) gave the nod to Samford University in Homewood. Cornerback Brodie Medders (pictured right) will be attending Jacksonville University in Jacksonville, Florida. Head coach Josh Wright said, “I am very proud of these young men. It’s a great honor to our team, our school, and their teammates. Many other seniors have offers on the table and will be deciding in the next few weeks. Students at Bessemer Academy are participating in the Great Kindness Challenge which is the week we emphasize acts of kindness and service.  Each student in grades K5-12 was given a list of 50 acts of kindness with the goal of checking them all off this week. Parents, please talk with your student about the challenge and encourage him or her to participate. We are looking forward to hearing stories from the Rebel Nation about how you have practiced intentional kindness! What? The Great Kindness Challenge is a proactive and positive bullying prevention initiative that improves school climate and increases student engagement. The Great Kindness Challenge is one week devoted to performing as many acts of kindness as possible. Upper elementary and middle school classes students competed against their classmates last week to determine our representatives at the next level of competition. Congratulations to the following class winners! 4th grade – Colton Colburn 5th grade – Sarah Spurgeon 6th grade – Taylor Massey 7th grade – Alyssa Lawley 8th grade – Alexis Oliver These students represented us well at the district bee January 19, 2016, but none was able to qualify for the state bee.
