The Rebels’ road to the 2019 State Championship was an unusual one. The season started 0-2, with opponents outscoring the Rebels 97-12.  But then something changed. All it took was a spark—a 49-14 victory over Evangel—and the Rebels finished the season 11-1, averaging 41.3 points per game, and allowing only 16 per game.   The Playoffs BA entered the playoffs ranked 2nd in the region, behind Tuscaloosa Academy. The Rebels hosted Fort Dale Academy and saw a 49-0 victory. With three rushing touchdowns, a pick-6, fumble recovery and punt returns for touchdowns, the Rebels just couldn’t be stopped. For the second round, BA traveled to the defending state champion, Monroe Academy. The Rebels beat Monroe 38-21 in the regular season, but this game would be on their turf, so all bets were off. The Bessemer Academy track team headed down to Gulf Shores last Wednesday to compete in the AISA State track tournament. Our boys team came in second place overall, with three first-place finishes. The boys won the 4×100 meter relay, Justin Jones scored a win at the 300m hurdles, and Josh McMillon won the 200m dash. Additionally, Josh McMillon placed 2nd in the 100m dash, KC Harrison 2nd in the 200m, Ben Casey 2nd in the triple jump, and Braxton Griffin 3rd in shot put. Meanwhile, the girls scored third place in the 4x100m relay and Tristen Sellers placed third in the 400m dash. Overall, Bessemer Academy Boy’s team finished second in the state, while the Bessemer Academy Girl’s finished sixth.

The Rebels finished off an incredible 20-2 season with a 63-46 victory over Tuscaloosa Academy to win the AISA AAA State Championship! The Rebels finished the regular season 17-2, and began their state tournament with a 52-47 victory over Lee-Scott Academy. Preston Jones led the Rebels scoring 20 points, with LT and Micaiah Overton adding 11 and 10 points respectively. After beating Lee-Scott, the Rebels faced Pike Liberal Arts, coming away with a 61-47 win. Preston Jones and Josh McMillon led the Rebels with 15 and 11 points, with LT and Micaiah Overton adding 11 and 10 rebounds each. Bessemer Academy then faced Tuscaloosa Academy for the fourth time this season. The Rebels led the series 2-1 coming into the State Final Game. We began a new BA family tradition today – Senior Academic Signing Day. Our seniors who have accepted an academic scholarship were recognized in a special ceremony. While we already hold signing days for athletic scholarships, and we recognize all senior achievements at Awards Day and Graduation, we wanted to specifically honor these academic scholarships.
